Modern Calligraphy for Beginners

Handwritten notes never go out of style, and if holiday cards, place cards and gift tags are on your to-do list, now is the perfect time to learn the art of calligraphy. 

Settle in at the AAA Four Diamond JB Duke Hotel's sleek Marketplace Bar for a beginner-friendly calligraphy workshop led by Anna White of Sip & Script. Designed for stationery enthusiasts, DIY brides-to-be and anyone who enjoys trying something new, the class introduces modern calligraphy techniques using a pointed dip pen and ink. 

You will receive two hours of instruction and demonstration plus a beginner's calligraphy kit with two nibs, a pot of black ink, two letter guides, tracing paper and a straight pen holder. Everything you use in the class is yours to keep.

Beginner’s Watercolor Winter Botanicals Workshop

This approachable watercolor workshop with artist Sia Karamalegos is a relaxed introduction to painting, as loose winter botanicals like evergreens, berries and pinecones take shape while the color flows across the page. You will work in the season’s palette of deep greens, berry reds and frosted neutrals and leave the experience with several small, finished paintings to give your holiday decorations a personal touch. 

All materials are provided, including professional-quality Winsor & Newton watercolor paints, Fabriano Studio cold-press watercolor paper and brushes, so you can simply show up and paint.

Ready to start seeing the world a little differently? Join commercial photographer Abigail Jackson for an interactive class that will sharpen your eye and help you capture the magic in everyday moments. 

During “Photography and the Art of Noticing,” you will explore how light, composition, perspective and framing can transform your surroundings into a compelling photograph. Through real-world examples, group discussion, and hands-on exercises, you will learn to tell a story through an image and approach ordinary subjects with a more creative lens. The class takes place in the Inn's Vista Restaurant, where floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Duke Forest make an ideal setting for studying light. 

No professional experience is needed. Just bring your curiosity and a phone or camera.
